One of my friends has suggested a title for this blog to be Joyce’s Spring Break. And I might use that in another blog post. I thought I would let you all know what wondrous things are happening in my life. Here’s the story:
Well there are twists and turns to life – last Wednesday morning I slipped in my shower and fractured my right ankle. As I was crawling to the telephone Ember (my standard poodle) thought her mother was playing a new game on the floor. I was clear of mind to make several calls after the 911 cal to make sure things could be taken care of with Ember, the house, etc. I called a colleague Mike Courtney to inform my client that I would not be able to conduct the 1 PM webinar to his 85 exhibitors.
So the fireman and the paramedics arrive – again Ember thought they were there to play with her. But 2 firemen corralled her and got her to the exercise pen. As I was being worked on, my dear neighbor Debra came in and started getting clothes ready for me for the journey to ER.
The short story – I had surgery on my ankle on Thursday afternoon, returned home on Friday with a walker and instruction to have this leg elevated as much as possible. I can not place any pressure on the ankle for another 7 weeks!!!
I have hopped to the bathroom and to my office via the walker until yesterday afternoon when I got a free wheel chair. That is a huge help. Boy is my upper body strength building!!
I have had help here at the house. My friend Mathes has been here, but will be leaving on Friday. So I will need to work out a scenario with neighbors and friends a way to support me until I can walk again.
During this last week I have experienced countless blessings – and I believe I will have soooo many more to harvest. The calls, the offers of assistance are heart warming and I am taking people up on their offers.
Ember is in a foster home – this is one of the biggest blessings thus far. Her groomer Kate and her husband have taken Ember to their home. Not only does she now have a fenced in back yard, but a pool and a fellow girlfriend via a German Shepard named after the Archangel Uriel. Ember was so excited to see Kate and her husband when they arrived on Sunday for the pick up. I have attached a couple of pictures of her new environment. So I KNOW she is a happy camper. I have told them I want her back!!
I am off the pain prescription and am now on Advil – thankful that the pain is manageable. I am sore from the fall, new muscles discovered in the last week, etc. But I am OK.
My attitude towards this accident is – discovering the lessons for me to learn and grow. God is working through people to bring me comfort and joy and that is marvelous to watch and receive.
People have asked what they can do. First I would love conversations – you all know me, I love to talk. And there might be a task or two on my list you can help with.
There is a reason for this and my path to discovering it will change me – for the better.
In closing, for now – my advice to everyone – grab bars for your showers!!! Those would have saved me the trip to the hospital. Maybe I can find a grab bar company and become a spokesperson.
I will be blogging more about my discoveries in recovery on my Trust Agents 101 blog – so check it out from time to time. I believe there needs to be a hospital guide for us “newbies” – bed pan 101 and beyond. Maybe I can create something fun in this moment.
