Great post.  It is amazing how web 2.0 and social Media is changing the landscape of meetings and events. Though I agree with you its a slow change. I personally already love to take advantage of the social media offerings some conferences have to set up the face to face meetings and to get more out of the content of the meetings I attend.  
Two of my friends and colleagues started a Podcast (www.meetingspodcast.com)to talk about the industry of meetings and events.  We decided it was the best way to start conversations with our community.  I am really happy I stumbled on your blog.
